Old Pera is a small fishing village in south-eastern Jamaica, 15 minutes east of Morant Bay.The village is historic, with mountain and caribbean sea views. The area is known for its Cumina, a ritual celebration based on reverence for ancestors; it was brought to the island centuries ago by West Africans. The term Cumina is derived from two words in the Twi language of Ghana: akom (possession) and Ana (ancestor). The event honoring the deceased, which includes singing, dancing, and playing the drums, is anything but a sad occasion.
